We asked the chicken. She would like one small detail corrected, and she has been waiting 179 years.
It is not a joke. It is directions.
The oldest known version is in The Knickerbocker, a New York magazine, in 1847, filed with riddles that seem clever but are not, and in it the chicken crosses a street. The answer is an anti-joke: you wait for a punchline and get a plain fact instead.
